How Fast Can a Siberian Tiger Run? – Amur Tiger Speed

ALTHOUGH Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) are the biggest of the cats they can achieve the speed of 50 to 60 miles per hour. But this is the maximum speed of amur tigers and they just can’t afford to maintain it for longer periods. Amur tigers will hit 50 mph in short bursts.

How Fast Can a Siberian Tiger Run?

Like true tigers, amur tigers have massive body size one that prevents the animal from reaching the maximum speed. It’s not really easy to hit 70 or 80 kilometers per hour for it consumes too much energy. The average weight of a Siberian tiger is around 400 lb but they can weigh up to 550 lb. Therefore, it’s mammoth task for such a heavy mammal to cruise and maintain the speed of 60 mph.

Amur tigers are thought to hunt at a speed of 50 mph but their top speed is somewhere near 60 miles (96 km/h). They have keen eyesight particularly at night so they don’t have to rely on their speed to hunt prey at night. Siberian tigers have excellent sense of smell and good hearing sense too.

I'm excited to share with you my passion for these elusive yet majestic creatures dwelling on earth. This richly illustrated work brings me close to Russia's iconic big cat, so I could explore as to how it lives and how it interacts with others of its own kind.
